Beginning Our Story

Long ago, when the Earth was new there was Raven and Loon. Both were plain white. They were stuck without colour.

To distract himself Raven did many things. He would visit and talk to animals all around the Arctic. He would sit on the ice and talk to Fish until Fish became annoyed and swam away. Then he would fly and sit in a tree near Bear.

12

He would talk to Bear until Bear became annoyed and would swipe at him with his great paw. Then Raven would fly over to Wolf and talk to him until Wolf became so annoyed that he tried to eat Raven. When Raven had no one to talk too he would dance in the snow.

One day, after Raven finished annoying Fish he decided to visit Loon. It was a long way to fly but soon Raven saw Loon’s igloo. Loon was working on her sewing when Raven burst in. Unlike the other animals, Loon was quiet and patient. She didn’t mind Raven’s visits.

15

“Do anything interesting?” Loon asked Raven.

“Nothing!” said Raven, “I am so bored! But now I hope that we can fun together.” Loon smiled and continued to sew.

As she worked, Raven talked, and talked, and talked some more! Loon listened to everything Raven had to say until Raven ran out of stories. Loon continued to sew. As Loon sewed Raven watched until he got an idea.

What do you think was Raven's Idea?

“Hey, why don’t I sew a coat for you?” Said Raven. Loon paused and then smiled. Like Raven, she was bored of her plain white feathers.

“That sounds nice.” Said Loon.

“But after, you must make me a coat,” said Raven. Loon agreed.

Raven carefully took Loon’s needle. He dipped the edge of the needle into the soot of Loon’s stone lamp. Then, using his magic, he began to colour Loon.

Next, it was Raven’s turn. Loon began to work on weaving a beautiful pattern for Raven. But Raven was not patient like Loon, he was energetic. He kept talking and dancing as Loon tried to work. “Stop dancing! Every time you move, I make a mistake.” But no matter how hard he tried, Raven could not sit still. For the hundredth time Raven jerked, and Loon’s lines Zig-Zagged.

How does the picture help you understand the story (I see, so I think/know).

“You’ve ruined it!” cried Loon. She was so angry with Raven that she threw her stone lamp at him, soot-covered his body.

Raven was hurt. He picked up the lamp and threw it back at Loon. It landed with a crash on her feet. Flattening them into the Earth.

Raven flew from Loon’s igloo, never to return.  Animals have long memories and to this day Raven is still covered in black and Loon’s feet are still flat.
