There were many city-states. Each city-state traded with each other. The large trading network was very imp0ortant for the city states. Why was the trading so impotant? What goods did the maya trade? How did the merchants travel?

Why did the city-states trade?

  • City-states near the coast had plenty of fish and salt. They have poor farm lands. traded fish and salt for maize and vegetables.

  • Low land city states traded building materials for shrimps, lobsters crabs from coastal city-states or Jade and obsidian from the highlands

The Maya did not use coins or notes to buy and sell. The merchants agreed between themselves how much of their goods they would swap for something they need. This is called bartering. Sometimes merchants carried jade or cacao beans with them to swap for goods because these resources were so valuable.

People who travelled around the region trading goods were known as mechants. Merchants are well respected and many lived very comfortable lives. They did not use donkeys or elephants to help them transport goods. They used people from from their own city-state or slaves. The city-states were linked by well built roads.

Merchants...

Sometimes the merchants used rivers or sailed to the sea close to the shore so they did not get lost. The merchants also used canoes made from hollowed -out tree trunks. These boats were up to 15 meters long, 2.5 meteres wide and powered by 25 rowers.
