Today we will work on recognizing and using vowel consonant ‘e’ syllables in words.  When a vowel is followed by a consonant and ‘e’, the ‘e’ makes the first vowel sound long just like in the word ‘lake’.

5

Let's look at some words.

  • strike, plane, mole, cute, tape, Luke

  • All of these words have the vowel-consonant-e pattern at the end of the word.

  • Multi syllable words can also have the vowel-consonant-e pattern in them too

  • Like the word lifelong

6

Lifelong

  • I know that each syllable in a word has one vowel sound. I see three vowels in this word

  • Let's spot and dot our vowels.

  •  I will keep the ‘e’ and the vowel before it in the same syllable

  •  I see ‘i-f-e’.  The ‘i’ sound is long because of the consonant ‘f-e’ that follows the ‘i’.

  • I see the vowel ‘o’ and ‘n-g’ at the end of the word.  I can use my strategies for open and closed syllables to read the rest of the word. The ‘o’ is closed in by a consonant ‘n’, which makes the ‘o’ have the short ‘o’ sound.  ‘Lōng” would not sound right.  That part of the word says ‘lŏng’.

  • I pronounce the two parts /life - long/. The word is ‘lifelong’

Boneless

  •  Keep the ‘e’ and the vowel before it in the same syllable. I see o-n-e today. What sound will the o make?

  • The ‘e’ in ‘less’ is short because it is a closed syllable. ‘Lēss’ would not sound right.
