6

Point

Curley's wife helps use understand the predatory nature of the ranch in which not only the strong attack the weak, but the weak attack the weaker.

This shows us exactly what the "point" of the paragraph is going to be and makes a strong claim all at once

7

Evidence

This can be seen when Curley's wife says to Crooks, "I could have you strung up on a tree." in which she is threatening him wither her status and power,

DIRECT textual evidence - the student used a quote to point to a direct instance - if this isn't possible be specific where in the text your point can be seen. This is a crucial step.

You may choose to include more than one piece of evidence when necessary or possible

8

Explanation

...whereas in reality she is a direct parallel of Crooks, as they both suffer from loneliness and discrimination on the ranch - Crooks being the only ranch worker of color results in his isolation while Curley's wife being a female concludes to her inferiority and hence lack of power. Curley's wife going against Crooks who is of similar status showcases that although the lack of power one may have, they will go to any extent to feel the slightest amount of superiority.

Note that the point isn't simply being repeated, but expanded - also note that it is more than one sentence

9

What are the main things to keep in mind?

  • Make your topic sentence(first sentence of the paragraph) direct

  • Use direct evidence - a quote when you can!

  • Your explanation shouldn't simply repeat your point, but expand - keep in mind the question you are answering

  • You may find that your body paragraph structure looks more like - PEEEE, PEEPEE, etc.
