2

Types of Root System

TAPROOT

It is the primary and the main root that develops from the radicle, bears many branches and remains underground. It is usually found in dicots e.g. sunflower, mustard, carrot, mango.

Slide image

3

EXAMPLES OF TAPROOT

  • Beetroot, Burdock, Carrot, Sugar beet, Dandelion, Parsley, Radish, Sagebrush, Turnip, Mango, Papaya, Jackfruit, Cassava, and Conifers

4

Types of Root System

FIBROUS

In this root system, the primary root is short lived. A cluster of slender, fiber-like roots arises from the base of the radicle and plumule which constitute the fibrous root system. They do not branch profusely, are shallow and spread horizontally, hence cannot provide strong anchorage.

5

EXAMPLES OF FIBROUS

  • cereal crops cornrice, wheat, barley, sorghum, millet, oats, rye, beans, coconut palm, grasses, and lettuce

STEMS

  • WOODY STEMS are non-green stems that are green and hard. They are covered with bark. Bark is the rough, outer covering of a woody stem.

  • Here are some parts with woody stems:

  • Trees- mango, jackfruit, tamarind, acacia, narra

  • Shrubs- santan, rose, gumamela

  • Vines- bataw

9

STEMS

  • HERBACEOUS STEMS are soft and green stems. Plants with herbaceous stems usually do not grow as tall as plants with woody stems. Plants with herbaceous stems are called herbs.

  • Examples of herbs:

  • cabbage, lettuce, pechay, ferns

PARTS OF A LEAF

21

LEAVES

  • Photosynthesis- the process in which plants absorbs light from the sun and convert into chemical energy stored as food

  • Chlorophyll- green pigments that capture the light energy from the sun

  • Stomata- tiny openings in the leaves where carbon dioxide enters the leaves

  • Blade- expanded portion of the leaf

  • Petiole- leafstalk that connect the leaf to the stem

  • Midrib- middle part of the leaf

  • Veins- either parallel or netted in pattern; branches of midrib

22

  • Stipules- small leaflets at the base of the stalk

  • Venation- arrangement of venation in the leaf

  • KINDS OF LEAVES

  • SIMPLE LEAF- has only one leaf blade attached to petiole.

  • COMPOUND LEAF- consists of many leaf blade attached to one petiole.
