What is the mitzvah of Chanukah?

To commemorate the miracle that happened when a small amount of oil lasted for 8 days by lighting the Menorah.

How many candles do we need to light to fulfill the מצוה of menorah? The Rabbis say the Mitzvah of Chanukah is נר איש וביתו.

So to fulfill the basic mitzvah you need one candle for a man and his household each night of Chanukah.

So why do we light one candle each night?. The extra candles for every day of the Chag is a Hidur mitzvah called מהדרין מן המהדרין.
