What is a prefix and a suffix?

  • A prefix is syllable that is added to the beginning of a root/base word.

  • A suffix is syllable that is added to the ending of a root/base word.

  • When a prefix or suffix is added to a base word it changes the meaning.

How do suffixes work?

  • For example, -or, -ar, -er, -ist means someone who

  • When added to the end of a verb/action word it means someone who does that actions.

  • For example: teach +er = teacher (someone who teaches), sail +or = sailor (someone who sails)

  • When placed at the beginning of an adjective or descriptive word mean the opposite of.

  • For example: non+fiction = nonfiction (means real/not pretend), dis+belief=disbelief (means not to believe something)
