  • After defeat in New England, the British planned to move the war into the Southern colonies where they believed thousands of Loyalists would join them.

Nathanial Greene's Strategy

  • 1780 - Washington sent Greene to slow Corwallis' advance through the south.

  • With a force too small to engage in battle, Greene led Cornwallis on an exhausting chase through the backcountry.

A Trap at Yorktown

  • The French warships defeated the British warships that were Cornwallis's escape and effectively surrounded Yorktown.

Cornwallis Surrenders

  • October 19, 1781. Cornwallis, trapped against the Chesapeake Bay, surrendered his army to Washington.

  • As the Americans in patched uniforms, lined the road, the British band played "The World Turned Upside Down" as 8,000 British troops laid down their arms (weapons).
