The War Goes South

• After defeat in New England, the British planned to move the war into the Southern colonies where they believed thousands of Loyalists would join them.

• (This is where the movie, "The Patriot" picks up.)

Guerrilla Warfare

• Guerrilla soldiers kept the cause alive in the South.

• Francis Marion (Mel Gibson's character in The Patriot is loosely based on him) harassed the British with hit-and-run raids.

Nathanial Greene's Strategy

• 1780 - Washington sent Greene to slow Corwallis' advance through the south.

• With a force too small to engage in battle, Greene led Cornwallis on an exhausting chase through the backcountry.

• By 1781, Cornwallis retreated to Yorktown, Virginia to rest.
