Protestant Reformation - Causes

  • Around the time of the Renaissance, many people in Europe began to question to Catholic Church

  • There was a practice in the church called "Indulgences" which meant people had to pay money to have their sins forgiven

Martin Luther

Martin Luther was a leader in the Catholic church who was against many of it's practices. On October 31st, 1517, he nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of his local church. These ideas spread and eventually people began new churches, called Protestant. He also translated the Bible into German so everyone could read it.
