Three ways to ask one person

"How are you?"

• ¿Cómo está usted? (notice the formal "you")

• ¿Cómo estás tú? (notice the informal "you")

• ¿Qué tal? (This one is slang. Use it in informal settings.)

Remember that "formal vs. informal" shows up in which "you" is used.

• tú is "you" when speaking to someone familiar to you. Friends, family, anyone in your peer group. Or a child in a younger age group than you.

• usted is "you" when speaking to someone you haven't met before, or anyone outside your family who is your elder. Use usted when the relationship is a professional one.

• Subject pronouns (Yo, tú, usted, él, ella, nosotros, ustedes, ellos, ellas) are often left out is Spanish sentences, because the verb form or other context make the subject clear.

• However, "usted" not left out as often. Keep it in, as an extra measure of respect.

Abbreviations

• usted can be abbreviated ud.

• ustedes can be abbreviated uds.

• Do NOT abbreviate any other subject pronouns, such as nosotros
