Question image

The diagram shows 3 states of matte.

What change (s) in kinetic energy would cause the same material to change from solid to liquid to gas, and then from gas to liquid to solid?

1

must remain the same

2

must increase, then decrease

3

has nothing to do with the change of state

4

must decrease, then increase

3

Think about wax/sucrose melting

  • Margarine melted—it turned to liquid

  • Wax got soft but didn’t really melt into liquid.

  • Sucrose didn’t seem to change at all.

Thermal Energy

  • We can use candles to heat wax and sucrose. Before, we studied energy transfer by conduction—when materials touch.

  • The burning candle flame produces thermal energy, which heats materials near it without touching.
