Objectives

  • At the end of this lesson, you should:

  • Know what sounds are, and how they are made

  • Know what vibrations are, and how they are made

  • Know what pitch and volume are

  • Understand the difference between pitch and volume

3

Open Ended

What do you understand by the term, 'Vibrations'?

4

What are sounds?

Sounds are caused by vibrations. Vibrations are caused when something moves back and forth. Sounds can be insulated, or made quieter, by soft materials. Say, Sara is played the piano in a room filled with pillows and her sister is playing the violin in a room without soft objects. The sound in Sara's room will be quieter then the sound in her sister's room.

Volume vs Pitch

8

Now you should know:

  • Sounds are caused by vibrations

  • Vibrations are made when something moves back and forth

  • Pitch is how high or low a sound is

  • Volume is how loud or quiet a sound is

  • The difference between pitch and volume

9

A quick way to remember the difference between pitch and volume

Remember: Loud volume is furthest and high pitch is fastest

Or, if you like formulas:

volume = loud/quiet = further/closer

pitch = high/low = faster/slower

10

Extra information;

  • We humans use our vocal chords and larnyx to make sound

  • The vocal chords vibrate

  • Bats use echolocation to communicate
