To be an excellent reader....

you need to be able to detect references.

References are used widely in reading texts.

  • It is used to avoid repetition- instead of "As Ali walked along the darkened alley, Ali cannot help but to look at Ali's behind to make sure that Ali wasn't followed.

  • You can write "As Ali walked along the darkened alley, he cannot help but to look at his behind to make sure that he wasn't followed".

As such, it is VITAL for you to be able to detect and understand references.

Generally, it comes in two forms: pronouns & others

PREPOSITIONS

The groups of prepositions

PERSONAL PRONOUNS

  • Easy peasy- we use them to replace proper name of a person

  • e.g.: I, You, We, They, He, She, It.

REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

  • We use this when the subject and the object are the same.

  • e.g. I (subject) cut (verb) myself (object).

  • e.g.: myself, yourself/yourselves, ourselves, themselves, himself, herself, itself.

RELATIVE PRONOUN

  • We use them to give further information on the nouns.

  • e.g.:This is the house (noun) that (relative pronoun) Jack built (the further information)

  • e.g.: who, whom, whose, which, that

DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS

  • We use this to point at things

  • e.g.: This, that, those, these, none, neither (and many more!)

OTHERS

  • These words can be an adverb, an adjective, or even a noun. It depends on the context.

  • e.g.: There, here
