Did you know that 1 half is known as a unit fraction? So is 1 third, 1 fourth, 1 fifth, 1 sixth, and so on because they name only one of the equal parts.

Here are some models of unit fractions (naming only one equal part).

2 Thirds is not a unit fraction because it names more than just one equal part.

Let's talk about 1 half again. Just like any number, we can write one half in many ways. This is the unit form. Notice we use a word in unit form (half).

But we can also use numbers to show a fraction. This is known as fraction form.

In fraction form, notice that the number above represents the named part or parts, while the number below shows the total number of equal parts
