7
What is fitness?
It is…. ‘The ability to meet the demands of the environment’.
Having the minimum level of fitness will allow you to go about your every day life and meet its demands without tiring.
Fitness is concerned with your PHYSICAL condition.
Don’t confuse fitness and health. To be healthy means to be in a state of well-being and free from disease.
8

Physical benefits include:
losing weight, improved posture and improved body shape.
Social benefits include:
meeting people and making friends.
9
Personal Qualities and Exercise
Being a member of a sports club and regularly participating in sport will develop personal qualities from:
1. co-operation – working with others
2. competition – testing yourself against others

4. aesthetic appreciation – recognizing quality of movement in a performance
10
Health and Performance
“A state of complete mental, physical, and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.”
Regular exercise can help keep people healthy by preventing illness.
“Performance is how well a task is completed.”

Muscular Endurance
Speed
Diet
Flexibility
Psychology
16
Aerobic Endurance
Aerobic endurance is also known as cardio-respiratory fitness, cardio-respiratory endurance or aerobic fitness.
It is the ability of the cardio-respiratory system to efficiently supply nutrients and oxygen to working muscles during sustained physical activity
17
Multiple Select
Which sports require aerobic endurance?
Football
Skipping
Long Jump
Cycling
Speed Skating
18
Aerobic Endurance
Alternative names: aerobic endurance is also known as cardiorespiratory fitness, cardiorespiratory endurance, or aerobic fitness.
The cardiorespiratory system consists of the cardiovascular system (the circulatory system – comprising the heart, blood, and blood vessels) together with the respiratory system (lungs and airways).
The cardiorespiratory system is responsible for the uptake of oxygen from the air we breathe, the transport of nutrients and oxygen around the body and the removal of waste products including carbon dioxide.
19
Muscular Endurance
the ability of the muscular system to work efficiently, where a muscle can continue contracting over a period of time against a light to moderate fixed resistance load.
20
Multiple Choice
Which of these tests is most relevant for measuring muscular endurance?
Sit and reach test
60 second press up test
Cooper 12 minute run
21
Open Ended
What does it feel like when you work your muscles really hard?
22
Flexibility
having an adequate range of motion in all joints of the body; the ability to move a joint fluidly through its complete range of movement.
23
Speed
Distance divided by the time taken.
Speed is measured in metres per second (m/s). The faster an athlete runs over a given distance, the greater their speed.
24
Speed Continued...
There are three basic types of speed:
1. Accelerative speed (sprints up to 30 metres),

3. Speed endurance (sprints with short recovery period in-between).
Speed relates to the rate at which your muscles are able to contract.
25
Open Ended
Can you think of performers who will need:
1. Accelerative speed (sprints up to 30 metres)?
2. Pure speed (sprints up to 60 metres)?
3. Speed endurance (sprints with short recovery period in-between)?
26
Agility
•Agility is the combination of speed and coordination.
