The Preterite Tense

Remember, the preterite tense is one of two past tenses.

It is used for a "one-time/completed action in the past".

Preterite indicators (last night, last summer, this morning, two days ago) help us recognize that the preterite tense is needed.

There are regular preterite endings and then there are verbs that are irregular in the preterite tense

Regular AR Endings

Preterite Irregulars

Some verbs are completely irregular in the preterite tense while other have a stem change that are accompanied with "irregular endings".

The four completely irregular verbs in the preterite tense are "ir"/"ser", "dar" and "ver".

ir = to go

yo fui / nosotros fuimos

tú fuiste / vosotros fuisteis

él fue / ellos fueron

Irregular Stems

tener --> tuv

estar --> estuv

poner --> pus

poder --> pud

traer --> traj*

hacer --> hic

saber --> sup

querer --> quis

decir --> dij*

venir -- vin

Irregular Endings:

e / imos

iste / isteis

o / ieron (j-eron)
