Today, we will learn how to tell these two sentence types apart and review Subjects and Predicates!

Simple Sentences

  • All sentences have a SUBJECT and a PREDICATE (everything that isn't the subject).

  • Simple sentences are also known as INDEPENDENT clauses.

  • They can stand on their own.

Compound Sentences

  • Compound sentences have TWO independent clauses joined by a comma and FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

  • You cannot SLAP two sentences together. That is known as a run-on.

  • The independent clauses you connect must make sense when you put them together.

  • Weird but helpful concept:
    Fanboys + , = . (Isles...explain yourself)

  • Let's say you're dealing with this:

  • Jorge went to the movies and saw the new horror film!

  • We gave Kimberly money to buy pumpkins, grape soda, and tuna.

  • The teacher asked the class to be honest so we had to fess up.

  • Can we make compound sentences in the chat?
