Simple Sentences

A simple sentence consists of a single independent clause. They can be short or long in length.

Ex. The hail fell. (One subject and one verb) 

Ex. Hail and rain are common. (Compound subject and one verb) 

Ex. My mother and sister bought the balloons and decorated the room for the party. (Compound subject and compound verb)

Compound Sentences

compound sentence consists of TWO OR MORE main or independent clauses. The clauses are joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction (fan, and, nor, but, or, yet, so – FANBOYS). They may also be connected with a semicolon (;). 

Ex. Linda ran a two-day computer seminar, and ten managers agreed to speak. 

Ex. All of the managers taught on the first day; two were missing the second day.
