Author's Purpose

As a reminder, an author's purpose is the reason or intention behind his or her writing.

An author’s purpose is reflected in the way he or she writes about a topic.

For example, if the purpose is to amuse, the author will use jokes or anecdotes (funny personal stories about a real event) in his or her writing.

Clues to an author’s purpose may be found in titles, prefaces, and the author’s background.
