Chiang Kaishek destroyed these dams in June 1938 in an effort to slow down the Japanese advance on Wuhan. No warning was given. Thousands of acres and 4000 villages were flooded. An estimate of 800,000 of Chinese civilians died. It did hold up the Japanese advance for three months, but left many Chinese very bitter against the government.
