Rational Expressions

A rational expression is a quotient of two polynomial expressions.

 x+yy+x=1\frac{x+y}{y+x}=1    and   xyyx=1\frac{x-y}{y-x}=-1

  • Simplifying - Factor then simplify

  •  (4k1)(16k2+4k+1)(4k1)(k3)\frac{\left(4k-1\right)\left(16k^2+4k+1\right)}{\left(4k-1\right)\left(k-3\right)}

  • Multiplying - Factor, then simplify

  •  5xx2=5x\frac{5x}{x^2}=\frac{5}{x}

  • Dividing - Factor, multiply by the reciprocal, then simplify

  •  (2s+1)(s+4)(1+2s)(12s)(2s1)(s1)(2s+1)(s1)\frac{\left(2s+1\right)\left(s+4\right)}{\left(1+2s\right)\left(1-2s\right)}\cdot\frac{\left(2s-1\right)\left(s-1\right)}{\left(2s+1\right)\left(s-1\right)}

  • Adding and Subtracting - Rewrite with a common denominator, combine, then simplify

  •  34w25w\frac{3}{4w}-\frac{2}{5w}  

  •  5534w25w44\frac{5}{5}\cdot\frac{3}{4w}-\frac{2}{5w}\cdot\frac{4}{4}  

  •  15820w=720w\frac{15-8}{20w}=\frac{7}{20w}
