Prosperity
Advancements in society led to more money & time...
During the 20's we see economic expansion, the mass production of goods, the assembly line, the increase in ownership over cars and houses, advances in the airplane, wide use of electricity, and a bunch of new technologies like; radios, washing machines, electric razor, fridges, and toasters
Work
-The standard workweek of 60-70 hours changed to 45 hours by 1930.
-Salaries and wages began to rise along with leisure time. With less time spent working and more money Americans began enjoying themselves more.
-Americans Started going on vacation, going to the movies, and/or out to eat.
-They began buying more luxury goods for their house which changing the standard of living for America forever

-New technology that sped up household chores and a new sense of freedom in the 1920’s brought great changes for women.
-More women began working outside the home and more women went to college and gained new professions like clerical sales, telephone operators, management positions, journalism, aviation, banking, & legal and medical professions

Young women began expressing themselves in new ways to show they had equal rights both politically and socially. Women wore short skirts, wore more makeup, danced, had their hair cut short, and drank(alcohol) and smoke in public.

Prohibition
-Banning of alcohol use.
-Supporter argued that it would improve individuals strengthen families, & have a positive impact on health
-Opposers argued it would lead to organize crime, wouldn’t stop people from drinking, and would hurt economy with the loss of thousands of jobs.

-Banned manufacture and sale of Alcohol

Outlawing alcohol encouraged more people to try it. Crime increased as consumers wanted/need alcohol. Bootleggers sold illegal alcohol at speakeasies Often times police and high political figures looked the other way when alcohol was involved

The Automobile
Cars
The automobile industry is the most important factor in creating prosperity during the 1920s. By 1929 - 1/9 worked in the automobile industry and car ownership went from 7 million to 23 million. Cars stimulated many industries like steel, glass, rubber, motels, fast food, construction, & oil.

The advancement of the automobile pushed new industries to grow as well. Industries that are affected by cars; Travel, food, entertainment, construction(need roads to drive a car)

Families were now able to take vacations. People were able to move easily able to the suburbs with the ability to drive to work wit their car. More kids could go to school because of the school bus.

Ford & The Assembly Line
Henry Ford
-Founder of Ford Vehicles.
-Model -T was the first car many Americans could afford.
-He was able to produce more cars which meant he could charge lower prices.
Ford as a Boss
Ford made shorter work week & paid workers more. He wanted his employees to be able to purchase the product they were building. Introduced the world to the Assembly line & conveyor belt system. Rather than having one person build entire car - line the people up and have each person do a small task repeatedly. Able to produce more cars much faster.
Assembly Line
Ford's Assembly line got adopted by any companies and industries. Businesses started mass producing good which caused lower prices.

With the new flashy products readily available, Americans wanted to buy them! Most Americans did not have the cash readily available. When buying a house, Americans would save all their money and then make one payment.
Installment Purchases/Buying on Credit
The buyer makes a small down payment on the product and then pays low monthly payments. Banks made it easier for Americans to get loans. Americans became less reluctant to go into debt and started to live beyond their means. Meaning, they were buying stuff that they couldn’t afford.
