Genotype Structure

  • Genotype: A two letter code that represents the passing of genes from parent to offspring.

  • Allele: An allele is represented by each of the letters. There are two alleles per Genotype.

How Genotypes are written

  • Genotypes are written just like you write your name: The capital letter(s) always come first.

  • There are three different kinds of Genotypes: Homozygous dominant, homozygous recessive, and heterozygous.

  • When writing a genotype, you use the same letter for each allele (the difference lies within whether it is dominant or recessive).

  • Example: AA, aa, and Aa
