What is preterite & when is it used?

• Preterite is a form of past tense.

• It is used to describe a one time completed action in the past.

• In English, preterite often ends with -ed.

• Example: Yesterday, I ran through the park.

• Eample: Last weekend we went to a birthday party.

• Example: I woke up late this morning.

Steps to conjugate for preterite -

• Identify the subject - Yo (hablar) por teléfono anoche.

• Drop the -AR, -ER, or -IR ending - Yo habl por teléfono anoche.

• Add the appropriate ending - yo hablé por teléfono anoche.

NOTE

• Nosotros is the same in present indicative and preterite!

• Accents are extremely important. Without an accent you can change the subject and tense.
