Commas in dates.

  • When a full date is written out, there should be a comma between the day and the year, as well as after the year if the sentence continues.

  • If you are adding the day of the week before the date a comma must go between the day of the week and the month.


  • Ex: I was born on February 3, 1985, and it snowed.

  • Ex: I went to Six Flags Great America on June 12, 2016.

  • On Tuesday, January 5th, 2021, we returned to school.

Commas in Cities and States.

  • When you are writing about a state or city that you live in you should always put a comma between the city and the state.

  • Ex: Algonquin, IL

  • Ex: For summer vacation my family traveled to Orlando, Florida.

  • Three or more items items in a list should be separated by commas.

  • Ex: I ate tacos, burritos, and nachos at Taco Bell.

  • Ex: She drove home from work, ate at Taco Bell, and then shopped.
