Properties of Equality

Addition Property of Equality

• States that 2 sides of an equation stay equal when the same amount is added to both sides of the equation.

• Example: (5+3)+2=8 +2

Subtraction Property of Equality

• states that when you subtract the same amount from both sides of an equation, the two sides of the equation stay equal

• Example: 5+3=8

• 5+3-2=8-2

Multiplication Property of Equality

• states that when you multiply the same amount from both sides of an equation, the two sides of the equation stay equal

• Example: 5+3=8

   $\left(5+3\right)\ \times2\ =8\ \times2$ 

Division Property of Equity

• states that when you divide the same non zero amount, the two sides of the equation stay equal

• Example: 5+3=8

• (5+3) /2 =8 /2
