Dividing with like bases

 x5x3\frac{x^5}{x^3}

  • if we expand the top it would look like this:  xxxxxx\cdot x\cdot x\cdot x\cdot x

  • if we expand the bottom, it would look like this:  xxxx\cdot x\cdot x

  • every "pair" of x's cancel leaving  x2x^2

3

But what if that fraction were flipped over?

 x3x5\frac{x^3}{x^5}

  • since there are more on the bottom, the answer this time would look like this: 1x2\frac{1}{x^2}

4

The real rule is to subtract the exponents.

  • Or you can ask

  • Which part of the fraction has the larger exponent?
