Expressions With Verbal Translations

Vocabulary is important in math!
With that, we have names for the different parts of a Math problem. First an equation has an = sign and an expression does not. Both may contain numbers called constants, as well as letters called variables. When a number is in front of a variable, that is called a coefficient. Each section separated by add + or subtract - signs are called terms.
4
What about 2X, what does that mean?
When ever you see two things next to each other with no operations symbols, that means multiply. so 2X is the same as 2*X. We see this a lot in math, also with parenthesis().
2X; 2(X); (X)2; (2)(X) all mean 2*X. Same with variables next to each other. XY means X*Y and ABC means A*B*C. So keep that in mind, if you don't see a operation between then it probably means multiply. try it.

Sometimes there is more than one word to describe Math operations.
Operations are add+, subtract-, multiply*, and divide/. Look at the picture and see all the possible words that could mean the given operations. the next page has the same picture.
10
11
Why do we need to know this?
It is important to express yourself and have others understand what you mean. What if you had to give a math problem over the phone with no pictures. By saying the correct words the person should be able to write the same thing you are saying. You learned how to read and say words in a book, so knowing how to read and say math problems is a good skill to have too.
12
Let us examone some common ones.
Add+; you will see the word sum or total used a lot with addition.
Multiply*; the word product or times are used a lot with multiplication.
Subtract-; difference or how much remains is very popular with subtraction.
Divide/; quotient refers to the answer of a division problem so when you see the word quotient, you know you are dividing.
13
Let us see these words in action.
Notice the picture has some examples. (X+5) can be said verbally as X increased by 5. You can say this verbally many ways, such as: X plus 5, 5 greater than X, 5 added to X. We need to know all the ways because we don't know how the other person will say it. With our chart from before, we will be ready to understand when it is said.
14
Let us focus in on the order we write.
Notice in the picture we sometimes see X first and sometimes 5 first under algebraic expression. Normally and most the time, we write the order just as it is said. Sum of x and 5 means x+5, same order. But look at X greater than 5, it is 5+X, not the same order. This is because of the word "than". When you see than, it means what comes after than is first. Try to think why this is true logically.
15
Is order really that important? YES!!!
If i give you 5-3 and 3-5, those have two different answers, 2 and -2, respectively. also 5/X and X/5 will give different answers. So always make sure you are writing the expressions in the correct order, especially for division and subtraction or you will get the incorrect answer.
16
Look at the bottom 4 examples with "and"
When we see the operation word first followed by and, we want to put the operation in-between the two given values in the order given. The product(multiply) of x and 5. This means we are multiplying the X and 5. Notice X comes first in the sentence, so X is written first then multiply symbol, then 5; X*5. Remember order matters.
Are you ready to try some?
