Washington's First Battles
Patriots were underdogs, Britain was powerful!
British Advantages = more soldiers, better training, better weapons
Patriot Advantages = GW!, home field (know the land better, secret spots), better reason to fight - What was the reason?
Freedom! A new way of life!

one time GW had to retreat = move away from the enemy
then GW wanted a spy - Nathan Hale volunteered
he went behind enemy lines, but was captured and hanged
famous last words... "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."
GW now has about 3,000 soldiers. Is that a lot?
No, but GW wouldn't be defeated. He wanted to keep his army together and persevere!

Victory at Trenton
GW wanted to win a battle to lift the spirits of his soldiers. What could he do?
He planned a surprise attack!
German mercenaries were at Trenton, NJ. mercenary = soldier paid to fight for another country
at night on Dec. 25th, 1776, GW rowed across the icy Delaware River to NJ
they attacked while the enemy was still sleeping, partying the night before
surprise attack success! - they capture almost 1,000 prisoners
