Germination and Growth

20

21

What kinds of seeds have you seen?

  • You may have seen dandelion seeds, apple seeds, or watermelon seeds.

  • Have you seen pumpkin seeds? Or sunflower seeds?

Slide image

22

How do you know when a seed germinates?

  • When the seed germinates, it opens and the roots begin to come out into the soil.

Slide image

23

Why do you think the roots appear first?

  • The roots appear first and go into the soil because the plant will get water and nutrients from the soil.

24

Flowers and Cones

25

26

What are some examples of plants that have flowers?

  • There are many different plants that have flowers.

  • Some of these are daisies, roses, tulips, geraniums, and sunflowers.

28

Do trees like apple or peach have flowers? Explain.

  • Yes, apple and peach trees have flowers.

  • Even though we think of them as growing fruit, many trees have flowers first.

Slide image

29

Along with making seeds in cones, can you think of another way these trees are different from other kinds of trees?

  • These trees are different than other trees because they have needles instead of leaves, and the needles don't fall off in the winter.

Open Ended

What would happen if every plant lived forever?

33

What would happen if every plant lived forever?

  • Plants would cover Earth, and there would be little room or resources for anything else.

Slide image

34

The animation shows a seed falling next to the plant. But what would happen if all the seeds fell next to the plant?

  • If all the seeds fell right next to the plant, it would get too crowded for the plants to grow.

  • Plants need space. Some seeds get carried away from the plant by wind or by animals, so they have a better chance of germinating.
