Biotic and Abiotic Factors
Ecosystems

2
Learning Objectives:
We will describe how biotic and abiotic parts of an ecosystem interact.
We will investigate how organisms and populations in an ecosystem depend on and may compete for biotic and abiotic factors.
3
Biotic Factors
Bio means life.
Any living or once living part of an ecosystem.
They can be producers, consumers, or decomposers.
4
Biotic Examples
Producer: Plants
Take energy from the sun to make their own food: Photosynthesis.
5
Biotic Examples
Consumer: Animals
Some consumers eat producers to gain energy. Some consumers eat other consumers to gain energy.
6
Biotic Examples
Decomposers: Fungi
Decomposers consume once living things to recycle their nutrients back into the ecosystem.

Abiotic Factors
No life cycle - Abio means never alive!
Any nonliving part of an ecosystem.
Directly affect the survival of biotic factors.
19
Abiotic Example
Water: Everything alive on Earth needs water to live. Water is not alive.
20
Abiotic Example
The Sun: Provides energy to the Earth and impacts most living things. The Sun is not alive.
21
Abiotic Example
Earth: Everything alive depends on the Earth, but the Earth itself is not alive.
