What's a Unit Rate?

• A rate compares unlike things or units.

• The word unit means a single item or the number one.

• A unit rate tells how many units of one type compare to one unit of a second type.

• We can use the word per for unit rates. Per means "for each."

• We say "three dollars per pound" for a unit rate. We can also say "three dollars for each pound."

• We buy meat or bananas based on a price per pound. These are examples of unit rates

Rates and Unit Rates

• A rate is a special type of ratio with two different types of units.  $\frac{3\ practices}{7\ days}\ \ \ \frac{3\ cups}{2\ servings}\ \ \ \ \ \frac{8km}{1\ hour}$                                               100ft per 2 minutes or  $\frac{100ft}{2\ \min}$  

• A unit rate is a special type of rate whose second term is 1  $\frac{50ft}{1\min}$
