Who was Queen Elizabeth I ? 

  • Queen Elizabeth I was a famous Queen who ruled England, Ireland and Wales from 1558 to 1603. 

  • She was on the throne for 45 years!

  • The time she ruled was called the ‘Elizabethan age’ because of her name.

  • This was very unusual for the time.

  • King Henry VIII had Anne Boleyn beheaded because he thought she would never give him a son.

  • Queen Elizabeth was sent to live with her sister, Mary.

  • This would have been interesting because Mary was being brought up Catholic, and Elizabeth - protostant (a new branch of Christianity).

  • When Henry VIII died in 1547, Elizabeth’s brother, Edward, became King. 

  • Edward VI died in 1553 and someone called Lady Jane Grey was queen. (For only 9 days!)

  • Then Elizabeth’s sister, Mary became Queen.

  • Sir Thomas Wyatt led a rebellion against Mary but because Elizabeth knew the plan she was locked in a tower for 8 weeks!

  • When Wyatt was executed, Elizabeth was set free. 

  • Mary died in 1558 which meant that Elizabeth became queen.

  • She was a queen who liked to get her way and had a temper. 

  • But she did have wise advisors to help her rule. 

  • She travelled around England visiting castles and grand houses.

  • Next in line to the throne was James VI of Scotland, son of Mary Queen of Scots. He was also related to Elizabeth. 

  • He became King James I of England when Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603.

  • She was buried in Westminster Abbey next to her grandfather Henry VII.
