Lesson objectives:
- I can define rotation of planet Earth
- I can define time zones
- I can define the Prime Meridian
3
4
Earth in space
- Earth, the Sun, the planets and the stars in the sky are all part of our galaxy called called The Milky Way, because its starts look like a trail of spilled milk across a night sky.
5
Planet Earth and The Sun
- The Sun is about 150 million km far away from the Earth but still provides our planet with light and heat.
6
Open Ended
Brainstorming: Explain your understanding of the Earth's rotation.
7
Earth's rotation
- Earth rotates around imaginary axis once every 24 h.
- Earth's axis is tilted for 23.5 degrees.
8
Open Ended
Research and identify what are two the most important effects of the Earth's rotation?
9
Draw
Draw your understanding of Earth's rotation.
10
- Effects of Earth's rotation are:
1. Day / Night
2. Time Zones
11
Time zones
- The term time zone can be used to describe several different things, but mostly it refers to the local time of a region or a country.
A time zone is a region with a standard time throughout that is used for all social, commercial and legal purposes within that region. The Earth is loosely divided into 24 regions (time zones) separated by longitude.
12
Open Ended
Critical thinking: Why do we need time zones on Earth?
13
Integration with Math:
The Prime Meridian is dividing our planet on Eastern (+ time zones from 1-12) and Western Hemisphere (- time zone from 1-12). There are 360 degrees of Longitude. The space between meridians is 4 minutes. Let's do the Math calculation:
360x4=1440
1440/60=24
