Adverbs of Degree/ Extent
The words the tell us the degree or what extent the verb is modified are called adverbs of degree.

a. These shoes are too big for you.
b. This is very difficult question.
c. The room was quite dark and we could not see anything.
d. Karin did very well in the examination.
e. Anand won his match pretty easily.
f. The sun had nearly set when we reached home.

In a, the adverb too tells us how big the shoes are.
In b, the adverb very tells us how difficult the question was.
In c, the adverb quite tells us how dark the room was.
In d, the adverb very tells us how well Kiran did in the examination.
In e, the adverb pretty tells us how easily Anand won the match.
In f, the adverb nearly tells us how closely the sunset.
