We have three levels of government!
So there are quite a few powers to categorize...
9
Why have different levels of government?
It turns out, allowing the states in a huge country like ours to govern themselves is a great idea!
Rather than have all 50 states be clones of one another, they are able to control certain issues of their own, and have their own diverse identities.
10
Unity is important, too.
Each state enjoys the security and safety of being under the control and protection of a larger nation.
Some jobs are too big for any one state to do on its own. For example, the national government has the sole power of setting up a single system of currency-money-for the entire country. Can you imagine if each state had its own dollars and coins, each with a different value? You would need to take along a calculator to go shopping in another state!
11
Sharing powers with the central and state governments is called...
(a system of government)
12

... that's it.
13
In this huge country, not all citizens are alike.
Americans in Oregon, for example, might need different things from their government than Americans in Alabama. They might even have different values, or cultures. So, the Constitution allows the 50 states to pursue their own agendas…to an extent.
