2

Multiple Select

What was the main reason for the decline of Manchester Docks in Salford?

1

Labour costs became too expensive

2

The area became overcrowded and factories were unable to expand

3

Container ships which were now the main type of cargo ship, were too large to sail up the ship canal.

4

The area was so polluted that the council decided it needed to be shut down

3

Open Ended

Identify two environmental issues that existed when the docks were finally closed.

4

Multiple Select

What are the advantages of using a land use survey for data collection?

1

It needs good map skills

2

It is simple to complete

3

Once the data is mapped, using colour coding, it is easy to read

4

Passers by are happy to help you work out the land use

5

Open Ended

What risks might be involved in travelling on the trams and how might these be reduced?

6

Open Ended

What is the main disadvantage when using a bi-polar environmental quality survey to collect data?

7

Learning Intentions

To consider a variety of data presentation methods and how appropriate they are to display different types of data

8

Data Sampling

What type of sampling has taken place here?

9

Multiple Select

What type of sampling has taken place at Salford Quays?

1

Random sampling - uses random number tables to decide on the sample that is taken.

2

Line sampling - where data/ measurements are taken along a line sometimes called a transect

3

Stratified sampling - when a sample contains an equal number of results in each category

4

Systematic sampling - the sample is collected according to an agreed sample. e.g. every fifth person is interviewed

10

What can we remember about the history of Salford Quays

Why was regeneration needed here?

11

Slide image

12

Open Ended

Write a short intro paragraph about Salford Quays giving reasons why regeneration was necessary

13

Open Ended

Based on what we know - can you predict what the outcome of the investigation might be?

Has the regeneration in Salford Quays provided new social, economic and environmental opportunities for the local area?

16

What are the main land uses identified here?

What opportunities do they think that they present?

Slide image

17

Open Ended

Identify one of the main land uses identified by the investigation and suggest how this may provide social, economic or environmental opportunities in the local area

18

This data would generally be represented as a colour coded map

What might be the advantages and disadvantages of this method of data presentation?

19

Pedestrian count

This data gives us the opportunity to use more complex data presentation techniques

20

Pedestrian count data

How could we best present this data?

21

Pictogram

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this method of data presentation?

Isoline maps

Isolines are lines drawn on a map connecting data points of the same value

Slide image

24

Advantages of isoline maps

  • You can see gradual changes across an area

  • They avoid the problem of boundary lines

  • They help the reader to recognise patterns and relationships between the geography of an area and data that might have been collected on the ground

25

Disadvantages of isoline maps

  • They are very time consuming to make

  • They can be difficult to read if the lines are very close together, and the numbers and lines are very small.

26

Open Ended

How would you present the pedestrian count data? Why?

28

Radar graphs

radar or spider or web graoh or chart is a two-dimensional chart type designed to plot one or more series of values over multiple quantitative variables

They are often used to represent data collected during environmental quality surveys

Site 1 Radar graph

How would you rate this type of graph as a method of data presentation?

Slide image

33

Slide image

Centre of the graph -15; outside +15

How useful is this method of data presentation?

34

Advantages of radar graphs

Allows data from different locations to be overlaid and compared on different charts

Allows you to make comparisons quickly

35

Disadvantages of radar graphs

It can become confusing if there are a lot of variables on the chart

If there are more than one web on the chart it can be difficult to read
