Multiple Select
What two things should you be able to do after practicing this standard?
Cite evidence
Make an inference
Identify the theme
Determine the meaning of words in context
4
Write these down-copy them- whatever but you need to know these words
5
Open Ended
What is the difference between implicit and explicit?
6
7
Multiple Choice
Which of these is an example of implying NOT inferring?
"I saw your girlfriend with Mikey at the pool...."
"I know your boyfriend likes video games."
"I saw you at work yesterday."
"I met your mom yesterday at open house."
8

What does this image usually mean?
9
If you said...
that the music is going to be explicit or use curse words you are right!
Explicit songs don't bleep anything out- they say things DIRECTLY
10
Poll
Does the radio play EXPLICIT songs?
Yes
No
Idk
11
If you said...
No, then you're right again.
Radio stations don't play explicit songs they bleep out the bad words or replace them, however, can you still guess what they're saying?
12
Poll
I can still tell what the song is saying
Yes
No
13
If you said...
Yes, then you are making an INFERENCE.
No, then you're going to learn how to make an inference.
So what is an inference?
14
15
16
Inferences
Inferences are based on your prior knowledge. That means that sometimes you won't all get the same inference. Everyone does not have the same experiences. (I've never been to Disney World so that means I probably wouldn't be able to use that knowledge to make an inference.)
17
Inferences
Inferences can't be wrong as long as you explain them and have good evidence.
This doesn't apply to multiple-choice questions, obviously, but you just have to apply what you know to the text and make a logical ~guess/hypothesis~.

Evidence to Support Inferences

Yes.
No
27
28
Multiple Choice
Does he literally mean that there are dogs and cats raining?
Duh, it happens all the time.
No
29
30
What is being implied? Look at the word choice.
“His godmother became as immobile as a great stone or as one of our oak or cypress stumps.” (p.3)
31

What is being implied?
32
What is being implied?
“The leaves were as still as if they were painted there.” (p. 84)
33

What is being implied?
34
Notice how I used the text to make my conclusions and my prior knowledge
35
Poll
I can make a logical inference.

Multiple Choice
Evidently, there was a disturbing quality in the sound that Sabor heard, something that inspired a certain restlessness, if not actual apprehension,
though she could not be sure as yet that it boded ill. It might be her great lord
returning, but it did not sound like the movement of a lion, certainly not like a
lion dragging a heavy kill. She glanced at her cub, breathing as she did so a
plaintive whine. There was always the fear that some danger menaced him,
this last of her little family, but Shabor was there to defend him.
Based on the details of the passage the reader can conclude that Sabor is...
a pet bear
the pack leader
a mother lion
a lion cub

the cub will be taken
there is danger coming
there is nothing to fear
someone was hiding
