I can ...
...explain how Earth's rotation, revolution and tilt causes seasons and changes in daylight hours.
6
Standard
6.ESS.2 Design models to describe how Earth's rotation, revolution, tilt, and interaction with the sun and moon cause seasons, tides, changes in daylight hours, eclipses, and phases of the moon.
7
Collision!
About 4 Billion years ago a Mars sized planet collided with Earth, tilting it on it's axis.
This caused the tilt that is responsible for our seasons.
8
9
Summer Solstice
Summer Solstice: when the North Pole is tilted most directly toward the sun.
In the northern hemisphere this is around June 20th
This is the longest day of the year.
10
Summer
During summer the hemisphere is tilting toward the sun
It is getting very direct light
The sun is high in the sky
The other hemisphere is getting indirect light, or winter light
11
Winter Solstice
Winter Solstice: When the North Pole is tilted the furthest from the sun.
In the Northern Hemisphere this is around December 21st
The shortest day of the year.
12
Winter Solstice
During winter the hemisphere is tilted away from the sun
The hemisphere is tilted away from the sun
the hemisphere is getting indirect light
the sun is low in the sky
13
Equinoxes
Equinox: when the sun is shining directly at the equator.
Day and night are equal hours.
Happens in the Spring and the Fall (September 22nd and March 20th)
14
Open Ended
Mars has seasons too. What does this mean about Mars?
15
Open Ended
What's the difference between an equinox and a solstice?
16
Poll
Why is the Earth hotter in the Summer?
It is closer to the sun
It is tilted towards the sun
the sun is hotter during summer
The moon reflects more light during the summer
17
Multiple Choice
