When we look at layers, it's like this childhood game. What is on top is seen first and the top layers can cover what's underneath.

3

Layers

  • allows you to keep separate elements in your panels, such as backgrounds, characters, and props, into separate drawing spaces, as well as to manipulate or animate them if needed.

media

4

Layer Types

  • A character or prop layer (A)

  • a background layer (BG

5

Layer Types

  • Vector Layers

  • Bitmap Layers

  • 3D Layers

  • Group

Multiple Choice

Which colour is the bitmap layer sidebar?

1

black

2

blue

3

green

4

red

8

Vector Layers

  • made of points and curves that compose the contours of the shapes of the artwork

  • can be scaled up and zoomed in without losing quality unless they contain a texture.

  • each drawing stroke and pencil line is a separate object which can be manipulated individually.

media

9

Bitmap Layers

  • composed of a grid of pixels

  • allow you to lay on brush strokes onto a single flat canvas, and to tweak your artwork by the pixel if needed.

  •  composited into the canvas, so it remains a single drawing that can only be painted or erased upon, but which does not allow you to tweak individual parts of it.

Multiple Choice

How do you add a bitmap layer to your current panel?

1

click on the >> button at the upper left corner of the layer toolbar and selecting add bitmap layer

2

from the top "layers" menu "add bitmap layer" button a the bottom of the layer toolbar or right- clicking the layer toolbar

11

Multiple Choice

How do you select multiple layers inside the same panel?

1

by pressing the lock button

2

by clicking and dragging

3

by selecting and then pressing ctrl and clicking each layer

12

Multiple Choice

What is one way to tell if a layer has no art on it?

1

the icon on the side of the layer displays closed eyes

2

the word empty is by the name of the layer

3

the layer has a red sidebar

13

3D Layers & Groups

  • 3D: import a 3D model into your library, adding it to a panel will store the model into a 3D layer. You can then manipulate and animate the 3D model, just like you can with a drawing layer.

  • A group can contain several layers of any type. Just like you can transform and animate a layer, you can also transform and animate a group.

14

Multiple Choice

What is the advantage of using Vector Layers?

1

resolutions independent and lighter

2

easy to maneuver and possibility of changing opacity

15

Multiple Choice

What is the advantage of using a bitmap layer?

1

can use textures

2

it doesn't use pixels

16

Merging Layers

  • results in a single drawing layer, which you can edit and animate like any other drawing layer

  • When merging layers, the animation on all layers being merged is discarded

  • If you quickly merge a bitmap layer with a vector layer, the resulting layer will be a bitmap layer

17

Continued

  • Vector Layer: Makes the merged layer a vector layer. If there are bitmap layers in your selection, they will be converted to vector rectangles with a bitmap texture inside them.

  • Bitmap Layer: Makes the merged layer a bitmap layer. If there were vector layers in your selection, they will be converted to bitmap.

18

Changing Layer Opacity

  • opacity= alpha

This is a perfect example of what layers look like if you're standing over them

Transforming Layers

  • Layer Transform tool

  • rotate

  • scale

  • move

  • resize
