Every Cherokee belonged to one of the seven clans. The English translation of these clan names are: Long Hair, Wolf, Paint, Bird, Deer, Blue and Wild Potato. Multiple clans lived in the same village. Men and women were forbidden from marrying someone within their own clan. When a bride and groom married, the groom became part of the brides clan.
