Types of Sonnets

• Shakespearean Sonnet

• Italian Sonnet

Shakespearean Sonnet

• Made up of four parts

• Three four line groups and one couplet

• The rhyme scheme is abab cdcd efef gg

Rhyme Scheme

• A pattern of end rhyme in a poem

• Assign a letter of the alphabet to each end rhyme

• Line with the same end rhyme gets the same letter.

Rhyme Scheme Example

At night I stand and watch the stars on high (a)

And think of how they twinkle far away. (b)

I wonder if somewhere in that array (b)

There stands another watcher of the sky. (a)

• One group of eight lines followed by a group of six lines
