What the ELPS do...

Unlike social language acquisition (BICS), the ELPS focus on the skills and practice necessary to use CONTENT/ACADEMIC language effectively (CALP).

Integrating the ELPS helps your ELs by scaffolding activities and allowing ELs the opportunity to PRACTICE within an academic setting.

The goal is to get the academic language to "stick."

TELPAS assesses each domain separately

• ELs receive a composite score that is HOLISTIC

• Three of the four domains are ONLINE

• Writing is assessed by rater(s) using authentic samples

TELPAS WRITING: The collection process

• Each content-area teacher will collect two samples from ELs

• Sample collection window is Monday, February 8 through Thursday, March 11

• The samples should be authentic and meaningful pieces that demonstrate EXTENDED writing

TELPAS WRITING: Collection requirements

• At least 5 samples MUST be collected

• One samples must elicit PAST TENSE (Narrative about a past event)

• Two samples must be from CONTENT areas

• See sample prompts in TELPAS packet

Ways to collect TELPAS writing samples

• Handwritten

• Electronically generated

In-person EL learners:

• Photocopy of assignment

• Photocopy of journal page(s)

• Original assignment on paper

• Printed copy of an electronic assignment

Remote EL learners:

• Printed copy of an electronic assignment

• Student emails assignment

• Parent drops off paper assignment

• Spell-check must be disabled

Encourage ELs...

• to write in as much detail as they can.

• to use vivid details in their writing

• to stretch their abilities and skills in writing

• to push their limits

• to include academic vocabulary they have learned in content areas

BOTTOM LINE...

• All content teachers will collect writing samples

• The writing samples must be collected between February 8 and March 11, 2021

• Writing prompts must be authentic samples

• Writing prompts should be determined in advance and listed in a shared Google sheet
