  • Sometimes referred to closed-source software

  • Source code are not disclosed, and usually not allowed to modify or reverse-engineer (work from compiled code to reveal the source code)

  • Pay for the right to use the software

  • which is determined by the software license that:

  • Where can the user use it

  • How many computers/accounts can use it

  • No redistribution of the software

  • They are proprietary software, except that end user are not paying

  • How is the developer benefit from this?

Freeware is very common nowadays thanks to inbuilt app store on smartphone, which most apps are free to install. How are those apps benefits from providing free services?

Benefits for freeware developers

  • Some freewares are providing limited functions or free for a certain amount of time (usually classify as shareware in this case)

  • Advertisement (very common in smartphone apps)

  • DLC (which is similar to point 1)

  • Malware (e.g. for DDoS), usually associated with pirate software but not limited to (e.g. some people claims that Facebook app is a spyware itself, collecting unnecessary data from user)
