RECALL

An algebraic expression contains one or more variables. You can substitute a number for that variable and then find the value of the expression. This is called evaluating the expression.

7

Evaluate the expression

 x9x-9 ; x = 15

  • Step 1: Substitute- replace the variable with the value 15 in the expression.

  • Step 2: Evaluate the new expression  15915-9

  • When x = 15, x - 9 is 6.

8

Evaluate the expression

 4x4x ; x = 8

  • Step 1: Substitute- replace the variable with the value 8 in the expression.

  • Step 2: Evaluate the new expression  484\cdot8

  • When x = 8, 4x is 32.

9

Fill in the Blank

Your Turn

Evaluate the expression

 m+6m+6  ; m = 18

10

Fill in the Blank

Your Turn

Evaluate the expression

 16n\frac{16}{n}  ; n = 8

11

Let's Review: Order of Operations

  • Step 1: Perform operations in (parentheses) first.

  • Step 2: Evaluate exponents

  • Step 3: Multiply and divide from left to right

  • Step 4: Add and Subtract from left to right

12

Multiple Choice

Given the expression

 65+36-5+3
which operation do we do first

1

add

2

subtract

13

Evaluate the expression

 3ab; a=4, b=63a-b;\ a=4,\ b=6

  • Step 1: Substitute- replace the variables with numbers in the expression. a=4 and b=6

  • Step 2: Evaluate the new expression  3(4)63\left(4\right)-6

  • The value of the expression when a=4 and b=6 is 6.

14

Evaluate the expression

 abc ; a=3, b=4, and c=6ab-c\ ;\ a=3,\ b=4,\ and\ c=6

  • Step 1: Substitute- replace the variables with numbers in the expression. a=3 and b=4 and c=6

  • Step 2: Evaluate the new expression  (3)(4)6\left(3\right)\left(4\right)-6

  • The value of the expression when a=3, b=4, and c=6 is 6.

15

Fill in the Blank

Evaluate the algebraic expression

 wx+y ; w=6, x=5, y=3w-x+y\ ;\ w=6,\ x=5,\ y=3

16

Fill in the Blank

Evaluate the algebraic expression

 bc+5a ; a=3, b=4, c=6bc+5a\ ;\ a=3,\ b=4,\ c=6

17

Fill in the Blank

 7(m6) ; m=87\left(m-6\right)\ ;\ m=8

Evaluate the algebraic expression

18

Fill in the Blank

Evaluate the algebraic expression

 wx+y ; w=6, x=5, y=3w-x+y\ ;\ w=6,\ x=5,\ y=3
