Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER)

  • It is the way that scientists communicate, evaluate, and revise their explanations about the natural world.

  • Scientists ask questions and make observations. Then, when they think they have an idea about how something works, they make an argument to support that idea.

1. Begin with the question & state your claim which answers the question.

2. Discuss evidence (be specific) that supports the claim.

3. Explain how the evidence supports the claim (reasoning-include Key Concepts).

4. Summarize the claim (again).
