2

You can model equations by using Algebra Tiles

  • Long Bar [Orange] = Positive Varaible

  • Long Bar [Red] = Negative Variable

  • Cube [Orange] = Positive 1

  • Cube [Red] = Negative 1

  • Remember Zero Pairs: A positive and A negative = 0

Example:

  • x + 3 = 10

  • The long green bar is positive x

  • The yellow cubes are positive 1's cubes

Multiple Choice

Question image

Look at the image. It shows: x + 3 = 10

Solve for the variable x.

1

x = 10

2

x = 30

3

x = 10/3

4

x = 7

5

Multiple Choice

Question image

The image shown, shows. 4x = 8

The x being the bars, and the circles being 1.

Solve for x.

1

x = 4

2

x = 2

3

x = 12

4

x = 32

6

Using Scenarios to Solve Equations

  • Step 1: Write an equation to match the situation

  • Ex: 40 = 8p or 8p = 40

  • Step 2: Solve for the variable

  • Ex: 8p = 40 -> Divide both sides by 8

  • p = 5 or "Each package costs $5"

1

x = 7 + 2

2

7x = 2

3

2 + x = 7

4

2x = 7
