What is an "in-text citation"?
A reference within your writing that identifies the original source.
A reference within your writing that is general information about an author.
A reference within your writing that is a general location of any outside source.
3
Why do we need in-text citations?
1. To avoid plagiarism
2. To inform readers about the origin of the source used
4
What are the two items (if available) used for MLA in-text citations?
Author's Last name
The page number where text is used
These items are put into parentheses
EXAMPLE: (Smith 70). **
**This assumes the source has a page number
5
Multiple Select
Check the qualities of Effective Evidence.
Provides some information about the topic, but the reader may have to make inferences (make their own connections)
Provides enough wording from the source along with the writer's thoughts so that the reader does not need to infer (make their own connections)
Uses the writer's own experience or opinion in place of evidence from a source
Comes from a reliable source related to the topic
Directly related to supporting the point the writer is trying to make

What's the difference between Quoting, Summarizing and Paraphrasing?
Quoting---involves copying short sentences or passages from the original text word-for-word and places copied wording within “quotation marks”
Paraphrasing---involves putting a section of a text into your own words, changes the words and phrasing of the original text, but keeps the original meaning of the text
Summarizing --involves stating the main ideas of a text into your own words, presenting a general overview of the author's main idea in the text
7
Direct quotes are placed within quotation marks (" ")
Example:
"It is ridiculous to borrow someone's items without them knowing, and becoming enraged when they're reprimanded for stealing" (Ling 20).
8
Paraphrasing---involves putting a section of a text into your own words, changes the words and phrasing of the original text, but keeps the original meaning of the text
Example:
It is foolish for someone to use someone else's things without consent and then being angry when they are penalized for robbery (Ling 20).
9
Summarizing --involves stating the main ideas of a text into your own words, presenting a general overview of the author's main idea in the text, so usually much shorter than the original text
Example:
Ling discusses the ludicrous way people become upset when they are punished for borrowing without asking (Ling 20).
