Buffalo Soldiers
About 20 soldiers went with General Sherman on his tour of Texas in 1871 at the time of the Warren Wagon Train Raid. Seventeen were African Americans from the Tenth Cavalry. These soldiers had been assigned to serve at Fort Sill. They were among the many African American soldiers sent to the area. Their goal was to make Texas safe for new settlers.
