Graphing Exponential Equations

  • Diagnose your a in  y=abx\ y=a\cdot b^x  

  • Diagnose your b in  y=abxy=a\cdot b^x  

  • Plug in two points: x=0 and x=1. (these are the easy points!)

For Example:

  • Graph

     y=2(2)xy=2\left(2\right)^x  

  • What would happen to the x and y values in your coordinate if you added 1 to the whole equation. i.e.  y=2(2)x+1y=2\left(2\right)^x+1  

  • What would happen to the x and y coordinate if you added 1 to just the exponent. i.e.  y=2(2)(x+1)y=2\left(2\right)^{\left(x+1\right)}

  • Graph  y=2(3)xy=2\left(3\right)^x

Graphing Logarithmic Equations

  • Remember the basic flip from exponential to logarithmic.

  • Plug in your basic y values for  y=log2(x)y=\log_2\left(x\right)

  • Graph  log10(x)\log_{10}\left(x\right)  

  • What would happen to the x and y values in your coordinate if you added 1 to the whole equation. i.e.  log10(x)+1\log_{10}\left(x\right)+1
